Texas Sheet Cake

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk


  • 1 stick butter
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 6 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 box powdered sugar

Mix flour, sugar, cinnamon and baking soda in a large bowl with a whisk. In a medium saucepan, boil butter, water, oil and cocoa powder. Pour over flour mixture and stir well. Add eggs, vanilla and buttermilk. Blend well. Pour into ungreased half sheet pan. Bake in preheated 400° oven for 15-17 minutes. Do not overbake!

During last 5 minutes of baking time, prepare icing by boiling butter, cocoa powder and milk. Remove from heat and add vanilla and powdered sugar. Pour over cake as soon as it is removed from the oven.
